Working closely with architectural and engineering staff from a project’s inception, this creative studio not only composes interiors but also designs custom furniture and particular artwork and accessories, defines new spatial programs, creates holistically-conceived branded environments, and researches innovative processes and paradigms. The designs that emerge from its collaborative teams of interior designers, researchers, and industrial and interactive media designers do not follow a pre-established aesthetic approach but evolve from the particular conditions of each project.  The studio’s output includes hotels, corporate offices, educational facilities, retail spaces, performing arts spaces, residential complexes, along with furniture, finishes, and products.

The Space Between the Sum of the Parts: The year 2007 became the historic tipping-point when the majority of the world’s population became city dwellers. The current urban in-migration has the potential for outcomes ranging from catastrophic to utopian. In the realm of the former, envision the pollution of vital land, air, and water resources, shortages of food, energy, and potable water, inadequate housing, eternal commutes, impersonal high rise districts, and aesthetically mind-numbing residential wastelands.  Conversely, the potential exists for creating cities of transit-enabling density, dynamic public environments, distinctive open spaces, quality infrastructure, and sensible settlement patterns. Taken together, these can promote sustainable growth and enable cities and their residents to live, travel, work, and recreate in balance with nature and with each other.

Ultimately who and what will decide which of these divergent conditions of urban existence prevail?

The answer lies to an essential extent in the work of urban planners. These are the “city builders” whose realm is “the space between the sum of the parts,” “in between” the buildings that are the province of architecture, and “in between” the neighborhoods, cities and regions, the planning for which plays an often underappreciated role in the healthy development of our urban centers. Intelligent and comprehensive planning at scales ranging from the international and national down to the individual street, block, and parcel are critical to enabling mankind to create cities capable of healthful, sustainable growth.

“City building” also describes the work of Studio Rodar planning professionals. Adhering to the principle that details reinforce the strength of the whole, Studio Rodar creates fixtures and furnishings that embody our commitment to functional, flexible, and sustainable design. From the creation of structurally driven "cafe" chairs which minimize the amount of renewable material needed for construction while preserving integrate strength and stability, to a "side" table that disassembles into nesting pieces for ease of storage and mobility while allowing for multiple configurations of use and function.  Studio Rodar designs everyday objects that focus on the pragmatics of function, efficiency and ease of fabrication to create innovation.  The firm draws on its multi-disciplinary talents to envision products that are more energy efficient, cost-effective, and adaptable to evolving technologies.
